Abstract | Last April German officials presented the Russian president Vladimir Putin with an elaborately inlaid chest and a tiny fragment of amber. They were apparently all that's left of the Amber Room (pictured), an 11-foot square, bejewelled chamber which the Prussian king gave Peter the Great in 1716. It remained at Tsarskoye Selo, the imperial residence near St Petersburg, until Nazi troops packed it up as loot in 1941. No one has seen it since. (Kurznotiz) |
