Abstract | Cause-and-effect (explanatory) relations in the Russian language have their semantic attributes that distinguish these relations from other types of conditionality – purpose, conditional, concessive as well as temporary, expressive, and the like. Such attributes are factuality, the implicative nature of the connections and the implicit expression of an abbreviated syllogism (enthymeme). The article discusses the means of expressing cause-and-effect relations and typology in the modern Russian language. Depending on the communicative attitudes of speaker, the sentence may actualize the cause or effect, or actualization may be neutralized (for example, in conjunctionless sentences). The research revealed distinctions between two main groups of conjunctions. These are the semantic conjunctions, which manifest cause as statement, and the group showing cause as conviction. The typology of cause-and-effect compound and complex conjunctionless sentences can be represented by correlation between different grammatical forms of the verb. |
